Gustavo Petro, born on April nineteenth, nineteen sixty, is a prominent Colombian politician, economist, writer, and environmentalist. He has made history as the first left-wing president of Colombia, assuming office in 2022. His political journey began at a young age when he joined the guerrilla group known as the 19th of April Movement (M-19) at just seventeen years old.
After a significant transformation, the M-19 evolved into the M-19 Democratic Alliance, a political party. Petro's early political career included serving as a councilman in Zipaquirá and later being arrested in nineteen eighty-five due to his affiliation with M-19. Following a peace process with the Colombian government, he was released and subsequently elected to the Chamber of Representatives in the 1991 parliamentary elections.
Petro's political ascent continued as he was elected to the Colombian Senate in the two thousand six elections, where he garnered the second-largest vote. Although he finished fourth in the two thousand ten presidential election, he later became the mayor of Bogotá in two thousand eleven, a position he held until two thousand fifteen. His ideological differences with the leaders of the Alternative Democratic Pole (PDA) led him to establish the Humane Colombia movement.
In the first round of the two thousand eighteen presidential election, Petro secured over twenty-five percent of the votes, finishing second. He faced a challenging run-off election but ultimately triumphed in the two thousand twenty-two presidential election, defeating Rodolfo Hernández Suárez in the second round on June nineteenth.
