Guttorm of Norway, born in the year one thousand one hundred ninety-nine, ascended to the throne at the tender age of four. His reign, albeit brief, occurred during a tumultuous period marked by the Norwegian civil war. Proclaimed king by the Birkebeiner faction, Guttorm's rule was largely influenced by the regent Haakon the Crazy, who navigated the complexities of a divided kingdom.

Despite his young age and lack of direct control over the political landscape, Guttorm's kingship reignited hostilities between the Birkebeiner and Bagler factions. The latter group received military support from Valdemar II of Denmark, further complicating the already volatile situation in Norway.

Tragically, Guttorm's reign was cut short when he fell ill and passed away unexpectedly. His death sparked rumors among the Birkebeiner that it was orchestrated by Haakon the Crazy's future wife, Christina Nilsdatter. However, modern historians regard these claims as dubious, leaving the true cause of his illness shrouded in mystery.

Following Guttorm's untimely demise, Norway descended into a low-intensity civil war that persisted until a settlement was reached in the year one thousand two hundred seven, which temporarily divided the kingdom.
