Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of H. R. McMaster

H. R. McMaster, born on July 24, 1962, in Philadelphia, is a distinguished retired United States Army lieutenant general and a prominent military historian. He served as the 25th National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018, following a notable career that included significant contributions during the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1984 and later earned a Ph.D. in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. His dissertation, which critically examined American military strategy during the Vietnam War, became the foundation for his acclaimed book, Dereliction of Duty, a New York Times Bestseller that remains influential within military circles.

During the Gulf War, he commanded Eagle Troop, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, in the pivotal Battle of 73 Easting. Following this, he transitioned to academia, teaching military history at the United States Military Academy from 1994 to 1996. His leadership roles continued as he commanded various units, including the 1st Squadron 4th Cavalry in Germany and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Iraq, where he played a crucial role in counterinsurgency efforts.

In February 2017, McMaster was appointed National Security Advisor by President Donald Trump, a position he held while remaining on active duty until his retirement in May 2018. After resigning from this role, he accepted a senior fellowship at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, where he continues to influence military and political thought as a lecturer and advisor.

Today, McMaster is recognized as a leading voice in national security, serving in various academic and advisory roles, including as the host of Battlegrounds With H.R. McMaster, where he engages with global leaders on critical issues affecting U.S. foreign policy.
