Haakon VI

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Haakon VI

Haakon VI, born on August first, thirteen forty, was a significant monarch in Scandinavian history, reigning as King of Norway from thirteen forty-three until his death in thirteen eighty. He also held the title of King of Sweden between thirteen sixty-two and thirteen sixty-four. To distinguish him from his great-grandfather, Haakon V, he is sometimes referred to as Haakon Magnusson the Younger.

The younger son of Magnus Eriksson, who ruled both Norway and Sweden, Haakon was favored by his father over his older brother Eric. This favoritism led to Eric's rebellion and the subsequent seizure of Southern Sweden. Following Eric's death in thirteen fifty-nine, Haakon became co-ruler of Sweden alongside his father, a partnership that lasted until they were deposed in thirteen sixty-four by a faction of exiled Swedish noblemen.

In thirteen sixty-three, Haakon's marriage to Margaret, the daughter of Valdemar IV of Denmark, played a crucial role in the Nordic power dynamics. This union produced one son, Olav, and marked the beginning of continuous conflicts with his father-in-law, which persisted until Valdemar's death in thirteen seventy-five. Seizing the moment, Haakon ensured his son's election as Valdemar's successor, overcoming the claims of their Mecklenburg relatives.

Upon his death in thirteen eighty, Haakon was succeeded by Olav, with Margaret serving as regent. Unfortunately, Olav died childless seven years later, allowing Haakon's widow to assert her authority over all three Scandinavian kingdoms, becoming their first female monarch.
