Habash al-Hasib

Habash al-Hasib, a distinguished Persian mathematician and astronomer, hailed from Merv in Khorasan. Flourishing during the Abbasid era, he made significant contributions to the fields of trigonometry and astronomy, notably discovering the trigonometric ratios of tangent and cotangent. His work laid the groundwork for future advancements in these disciplines.

Working under the patronage of two prominent Abbasid caliphs, al-Ma'mun and al-Mu'tasim, Habash al-Hasib's influence extended beyond his lifetime. His innovative trigonometric algorithm for solving parallax problems was later rediscovered by Johannes Kepler in the early seventeenth century, now recognized as Kepler's equation.

Habash's legacy continued through his son, Abu Ja'far ibn Habash, who also made his mark in the field of astronomy. Cited by the renowned scholar Al-Biruni, Habash's astronomical tables were expanded upon, further solidifying his impact on the scientific community.

Despite the passage of time, Habash al-Hasib's contributions remain significant. He lived to be a centenarian, passing away sometime between eight hundred sixty-four and eight hundred seventy-four, possibly in Abbasid Samarra. The title 'Habash,' which may refer to dark skin color, adds a layer of cultural identity to his remarkable life.
