Hafez

Hafez, born in the year 1326, is celebrated as a Persian lyric poet whose works are considered a pinnacle of Persian literature. His poetry, particularly his renowned collection known as the Divān, has become a staple in the homes of Persian speakers, who often memorize his verses and incorporate them into daily life as proverbs and sayings.

Known by the sobriquet Lisan al-Ghayb, or 'Tongue of the Unseen', Hafez's influence extends beyond his lifetime, shaping Persian writing significantly after the fourteenth century. His poetry is characterized by its antinomian themes and mystical undertones, often exploring the ecstatic nature of divine love through the lens of Sufism.
