Haing S. Ngor was a remarkable figure, known for his multifaceted career as a physician, gynecologist, film actor, television actor, and writer. Born on March twenty-second, nineteen forty, in Cambodia, he initially practiced medicine before the devastating Cambodian genocide began in nineteen seventy-five. Ngor's life took a dramatic turn as he survived the horrors of the genocide, ultimately immigrating to the United States in nineteen eighty.

His acting career was ignited by his powerful performance in the biographical drama film The Killing Fields, released in nineteen eighty-four. In this film, he portrayed journalist Dith Pran, a role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This accolade was historic, as Ngor became the first actor of Asian descent to receive this honor and was one of only two amateur actors to win an Academy Award, following Harold Russell.
