Hakainde Hichilema

Hakainde Hichilema, born on June 4, 1962, is a prominent Zambian economist, businessman, and politician, currently serving as the seventh president of Zambia since August twenty-four, two thousand twenty-one. Known affectionately as 'Bally' and often referred to by his initials HH, Hichilema has made significant strides in Zambian politics, particularly as the leader of the United Party for National Development since two thousand six.

His political journey has been marked by resilience, having contested five presidential elections prior to his victory in two thousand twenty-one, where he secured fifty-nine point zero two percent of the vote. Hichilema's rise to prominence came after the death of the party's founder, Anderson Mazoka, under whose leadership he initially served.

Before his election, Hichilema was a fierce opponent of Edgar Lungu, who held the presidency from two thousand fifteen to two thousand twenty-one. His political career faced significant challenges, including a controversial arrest on April eleven, two thousand seventeen, when he was charged with treason. This arrest was widely viewed as an attempt by Lungu to suppress dissent, leading to widespread protests both in Zambia and internationally, advocating for Hichilema's release.

After spending time in prison, Hichilema was released on August sixteen, two thousand seventeen, with the treason charges subsequently dropped. His experiences have shaped his political narrative, emphasizing the importance of democracy and human rights in Zambia.
