Halfdan Ragnarsson

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Halfdan Ragnarsson

Halfdan Ragnarsson, known as Hvitserk or "White-Shirt," was a prominent Viking leader born around the year nine hundred. He was a key figure in the Great Heathen Army, which launched a significant invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England beginning in eight hundred sixty-five. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle refers to him as a "heathen king," highlighting his formidable presence in the Viking Age.

As one of the six sons of the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok, Halfdan shared his lineage with notable brothers such as Björn Ironside, Ivar the Boneless, and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye. His connection to these legendary figures has led to some scholarly debate regarding his identity, particularly concerning his nickname Hvitserk, which may have served to distinguish him from others bearing the common name Halfdan.

Halfdan's legacy includes his role as the first Viking King of Northumbria and a contender for the throne of the Kingdom of Dublin. Historical records suggest that he may have co-ruled Denmark alongside his brother Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, as Frankish sources from eight hundred seventy-three mention rulers named Sigfred and Halfdan. His ambitions ultimately led him to Ireland, where he met his end at the Battle of Strangford Lough in eight hundred seventy-seven while pursuing his claim.
