Hamengkubuwono X, born on April 2, 1946, is the esteemed Sultan of the historic Yogyakarta Sultanate in Indonesia. He ascended to the throne following the passing of his father, Hamengkubuwono IX, on October 3, 1988, and was formally installed as Sultan on March 7, 1989.
In addition to his royal duties, Hamengkubuwono X has served as the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta since 1998. However, his path to governance was not straightforward. The position of governor was controversially awarded to Vice Governor Sri Paku Alam VIII, a decision that contradicted the historical agreement made during Indonesia's independence, which recognized the Sultan's role in the Indonesian War of Independence.
After years of negotiations between the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the central government, a significant milestone was achieved on August 30, 2012. The national legislature of Indonesia officially enshrined the convention that the Sultan inherits the position of governor, reaffirming the Sultan's rightful place in the governance of the region.
