Han Gan

Han Gan, a distinguished painter of the Tang dynasty, was born in the year seven hundred six. Hailing from a modest background, he was either from Chang'an, modern-day Xi'an, Lantian, or Daliang. His artistic journey began when he caught the attention of the renowned poet Wang Wei, who recognized his potential and sponsored his education in the arts.

Under the tutelage of Cao Ba, a prominent court painter, Han honed his skills and eventually became a painter at the Tang court. His body of work is notable for its rich themes, particularly those inspired by Buddhism and Daoism. However, it is his exceptional ability to capture the essence of horses that has secured his legacy in the annals of art history.

Han Gan's mastery of equine painting was so profound that he was said to have learned directly from observing the horses in the imperial stables. He not only depicted their physical forms with precision but also conveyed their spirit, a skill that earned him acclaim that surpassed that of his mentor. His influence extended beyond his lifetime, inspiring generations of horse painters, including Li Gonglin of the Song Dynasty.

In recognition of his contributions to art, Han Gan is honored with a crater named after him on Mercury, a testament to his enduring legacy.
