Han Kuo-yu, born on June 17, 1957, is a prominent Taiwanese politician and retired army officer, currently serving as the president of the Legislative Yuan since February 1, 2024. A member of the Kuomintang (KMT), Han's political journey has been marked by significant milestones and a commitment to public service.
Raised in a military family, Han graduated from the Republic of China Military Academy and dedicated six years to the Republic of China Army as an officer. His academic pursuits led him to study English literature at Soochow University, followed by a master's degree from National Chengchi University in 1988. He also pursued doctoral studies at Peking University from 2001 to 2009, showcasing his dedication to education.
Han's political career began in 1990 when he was elected to the Taipei County Council. He served three terms in the Legislative Yuan from 1993 to 2002, representing a portion of Taipei County. After a stint as the head of the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Company from 2013 to 2017, he gained national attention in 2018 when he won the Kaohsiung mayoral election as a dark horse candidate, marking a significant victory for the KMT.
Despite a setback in the 2020 presidential election against Tsai Ing-wen and being recalled from his mayoral position later that year, Han's political resilience shone through. He returned to the Legislative Yuan in 2024, winning a party-list seat and subsequently being elected as its president, reaffirming his influence in Taiwanese politics.
