Han van Meegeren

Han van Meegeren, born on October 10, 1889, was a Dutch painter and portraitist renowned for his extraordinary skills as an art forger. His journey into the art world began with aspirations of becoming a recognized artist, but he faced harsh criticism from art critics who dismissed his work. In a bold move to validate his talent, Van Meegeren turned to forgery, meticulously crafting paintings that mimicked the style of the Dutch Golden Age.

His forgeries were so convincing that they fooled leading art experts of the time, including the esteemed collector Abraham Bredius, who accepted his works as genuine 17th-century masterpieces. During the tumultuous period of World War II, one of his forgeries, a painting he claimed was by Vermeer, caught the eye of Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, who purchased it and cherished it as one of his prized possessions.

After the war, Van Meegeren's fortunes took a dramatic turn when he was arrested for selling cultural property to the Nazis. Facing the death penalty, he made a shocking confession, revealing that the painting was indeed a forgery. This admission led to his conviction and a sentence of one year in prison. Tragically, he passed away less than two months later, succumbing to two heart attacks.

Estimates suggest that Van Meegeren duped buyers out of more than thirty million dollars, with the Dutch government among his notable victims. His legacy as one of the most ingenious art forgers of the 20th century endures, transforming him from a dismissed artist to a national hero in the eyes of many.
