Hanan Ashrawi

Hanan Ashrawi, born on October eighth, nineteen forty-six, is a prominent Palestinian politician, human rights defender, and scholar. She began her academic career at Birzeit University, where she laid the foundation for her future endeavors in politics and activism.

In the early nineteen nineties, Ashrawi emerged as a significant figure in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), serving as the official spokesperson for the Palestinian delegation during the historic Madrid Peace Conference in nineteen ninety-one. Her political journey continued as she was appointed Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the second cabinet of Yasser Arafat in nineteen ninety-six, and she was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council, representing Jerusalem, in the same year, later securing re-election in two thousand six.

Ashrawi's influence extended to the Executive Committee of the PLO, where she made history as the first female member upon her election in two thousand nine and again in two thousand eighteen. After a distinguished tenure, she resigned in two thousand twenty, leaving a legacy of leadership and advocacy.

As a dedicated civil society activist, Ashrawi founded the Independent Commission for Human Rights in nineteen ninety-four, serving as its Commissioner-General until nineteen ninety-five. She also established MIFTAH, the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, in nineteen ninety-eight, and continues to lead its board of directors. In nineteen ninety-nine, she founded the National Coalition for Accountability and Integrity (AMAN), further solidifying her commitment to transparency and governance.

In addition to her political and activist roles, Ashrawi is a prolific author, having written numerous books, articles, poems, and short stories that explore Palestinian politics, culture, and literature. Her notable work, 'This Side of Peace,' published by Simon & Schuster in nineteen ninety-five, garnered international acclaim and recognition.
