Hans Niemann

Hans Niemann, born on June 20, 2003, is an accomplished American chess grandmaster and Twitch streamer. He made his mark in the chess world by entering the top 100 junior players list on March 1, 2019, and achieved the prestigious title of FIDE grandmaster on January 22, 2021. His talent shone brightly when he won the World Open chess tournament in Philadelphia in July 2021, showcasing his skills on a global stage.

In October 2025, Niemann reached a remarkable peak global ranking of No. 15, solidifying his status as one of the top players in the chess community. However, his career took a controversial turn in September 2022 when he defeated reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen during the third round of the Sinquefield Cup. This unexpected victory led to Carlsen's withdrawal from the tournament, sparking widespread speculation about potential cheating.

Following the match, Carlsen publicly accused Niemann of cheating, which prompted Niemann to admit to past online cheating incidents at the ages of twelve and seventeen. Despite this admission, he firmly denied any wrongdoing in over-the-board games. The fallout from the controversy resulted in Niemann's removal from the Chess.com global championship and a ban from the platform, where a report indicated that he had likely cheated in over one hundred games.

In response to the allegations, Niemann filed a defamation lawsuit seeking one hundred million dollars against Carlsen, Chess.com, and fellow grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura. Although a federal judge dismissed one of his claims on June 27, 2023, a resolution was reached on August 28, 2023, allowing Niemann to be fully reinstated on Chess.com and participate in future events. Carlsen agreed to play against him if they were to match up, marking a significant turn in their contentious relationship.
