Hans Urs von Balthasar

Hans Urs von Balthasar, born on August twelfth, nineteen oh five, was a prominent Swiss theologian and Catholic priest, widely regarded as one of the most significant Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. His intellectual contributions have left an indelible mark on contemporary theology.

Together with notable figures such as Joseph Ratzinger and Henri de Lubac, Balthasar co-founded the influential theological journal Communio. Throughout his prolific career, he authored eighty-five books, penned over five hundred articles and essays, and completed nearly one hundred translations, showcasing his dedication to theological discourse.

Balthasar is particularly renowned for his ambitious fifteen-volume trilogy, which explores the themes of beauty in 'The Glory of the Lord,' goodness in 'Theo-Drama,' and truth in 'Theo-Logic.' His works continue to inspire and challenge readers to engage deeply with the essence of faith.

In a poignant moment of recognition, Pope John Paul II announced Balthasar's appointment as a cardinal; however, he passed away shortly before the consistory. In his funeral oration, Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI, praised Balthasar, affirming that he was 'right in what he teaches of the faith' and that he 'points the way to the sources of living water.'
