Harold Whitlock

Harold Whitlock, born on December sixteenth, nineteen oh three, was a distinguished British athlete renowned for his prowess in the 50 kilometre walk. His athletic journey began at Hendon School and later at Hendon County School in North London, where he made a memorable contribution by planting an oak tree sapling in 1936, a gift he received along with his gold medal from Adolf Hitler during the Olympic Games.

Whitlock's athletic career took off when he clinched his first national title in nineteen thirty-three. By nineteen thirty-five, he had set a remarkable world record for a thirty-mile walk, completing it in four hours, twenty-nine minutes, and thirty-one point eight seconds. That same year, he achieved the remarkable feat of walking from London to Brighton in under eight hours, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The pinnacle of Whitlock's achievements came in nineteen thirty-six when he represented Great Britain at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, where he won the gold medal in the 50 kilometre walk. Despite battling sickness approximately thirty-eight kilometres into the race, he finished with a time of four hours, thirty minutes, and forty-one point four seconds, showcasing his resilience and determination.

After his Olympic triumph, Whitlock continued to compete internationally until nineteen fifty-two, where he made history as Britain's oldest international athlete at the age of forty-eight, finishing eleventh at the Helsinki Olympics behind his younger brother Rex. Following his competitive career, he transitioned into coaching and officiating, notably mentoring Don Thompson, who won gold in the 50 kilometre walking event at the nineteen sixty Olympics.
