Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, in 1821, emerged as a formidable force for freedom and justice. After enduring the brutalities of enslavement, including severe beatings and a traumatic head injury, she escaped to Philadelphia in 1849. However, her journey to freedom was not solely for herself; Tubman returned to Maryland multiple times to rescue her family and friends, ultimately guiding approximately 70 enslaved individuals to safety through the Underground Railroad.

Known as 'Moses' for her relentless efforts, Tubman navigated the perilous journey to freedom under the cover of night, employing extreme secrecy and strategic planning. Her unwavering commitment to the cause of abolition led her to assist others in reaching Canada after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was enacted, ensuring that newly freed individuals found work and stability.

During the American Civil War, Tubman served the Union Army not only as a cook and nurse but also as an armed scout and spy. She played a pivotal role in the Combahee Ferry raid, liberating over 700 enslaved people and becoming the first woman to lead an armed military operation in the United States. Her bravery and leadership during this tumultuous time solidified her legacy as a key figure in American history.

In her later years, Tubman remained active in the women's suffrage movement, advocating for the rights of women until her health declined. She spent her final days in a home for elderly African Americans, a facility she had helped establish.
