Harris Wofford

Harris Llewellyn Wofford Jr., born on April 9, 1926, was a prominent American attorney and civil rights activist who made significant contributions to the political landscape of Pennsylvania. He served as a Democratic Party politician in the United States Senate from 1991 to 1995, where he was known for his advocacy of national service and volunteering.

Wofford's career was marked by his role as the fifth president of Bryn Mawr College from 1970 to 1978, where he influenced the academic community and championed educational reforms. In 1986, he took on the role of chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, further solidifying his influence in state politics.

From 1987 to 1991, he served as Pennsylvania Secretary of Labor and Industry under Governor Bob Casey Sr., where he worked on policies that impacted the workforce and labor rights. His commitment to public service extended to the national stage when he became a surrogate for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, introducing Obama in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center during a pivotal speech on race in America.
