Harry J. Anslinger

Harry J. Anslinger, born on May twentieth, nineteen hundred and ninety-two, was a prominent American government official known for his influential role in shaping drug policy in the United States. Serving as the first commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department's Federal Bureau of Narcotics, Anslinger held this position for an unprecedented thirty-two years, spanning the administrations of five U.S. presidents, including Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy.

A staunch supporter of Prohibition, Anslinger was a fervent advocate for the criminalization of all drugs except alcohol. His zealous campaigns against drug use, particularly cannabis, positioned him as an early proponent of the war on drugs. His policies and advocacy for harsh penalties for drug offenses left a lasting impact on American drug legislation.

After his tenure as commissioner, which concluded in nineteen sixty-two, Anslinger continued to influence international drug policy as the U.S. Representative to the United Nations Narcotics Commission for two additional years. The agency he once led is now recognized as a predecessor to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the responsibilities he held have largely transitioned to the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy.
