Harry M. Daugherty

Harry M. Daugherty, born on January twenty-sixth, eighteen sixty, was a prominent American lawyer and politician. He emerged as a significant Republican political figure in Ohio, particularly noted for his tenure as Attorney General of the United States under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. His legacy is often intertwined with the infamous Teapot Dome scandal, a hallmark of Harding's administration.

Despite his influential role within the Ohio Republican Party from the 1880s through the early twentieth century, Daugherty's direct political career was relatively brief. He served two terms in the Ohio General Assembly, collaborating closely with Governor William McKinley during his final years in office. Although he aspired to national political office on several occasions, Daugherty faced challenges in securing his party's nomination and was never elected to a significant position again.

Throughout his career, Daugherty remained a powerful behind-the-scenes player, instrumental in the election of numerous U.S. representatives and senators. His role as campaign manager for Harding during the 1920 Republican National Convention was pivotal, leading to his appointment as attorney general following Harding's victory. In this capacity, he notably advocated for presidential pardons for anti-war dissidents, including the notable Eugene V. Debs.

However, Daugherty's career was marred by controversy, as he became the subject of federal corruption investigations on two occasions. Ultimately, in nineteen twenty-four, he was compelled to resign from his position as attorney general under the administration of Coolidge, marking a significant turning point in his political journey.
