Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Harun ibn Khumarawayh

Harun ibn Khumarawayh, born in the year eight hundred eighty-two, became the fourth Tulunid vassal Emir of Egypt from the year eight hundred ninety-six until his death in the year nine hundred four. He ascended to power following the assassination of his elder brother, Abu 'l-Asakir Jaysh, by army chiefs. Harun's reign was marked by a preference for a life of indulgence, as he largely delegated state affairs to his vizier, Abu Ja'far ibn Ali. This decision led to a significant crisis within the state, as the management of finances deteriorated and military leaders began to consolidate their power.

After Harun's death, the Tulunid dynasty faced a tumultuous period characterized by instability under his underage heirs. His son, Jaysh ibn Khumarawayh, was deposed and killed in November, paving the way for Harun's younger brother to take the throne. During this time, the Abbasid Caliphate, led by al-Mu'tadid, seized the opportunity to expand its influence. In the year eight hundred ninety-seven, al-Mu'tadid extended control over the border provinces of al-Thughur and compelled the Tulunids to relinquish all of Syria north of Homs, while increasing the annual tribute to four hundred fifty thousand dinars in exchange for recognizing Harun's rule.

The following years saw the Tulunid domains embroiled in domestic strife, exacerbated by escalating Qarmatian attacks. This turmoil led to the defection of many supporters to the resurgent Caliphate. Ultimately, in the year nine hundred four, the Abbasid forces invaded Tulunid-controlled Syria, taking advantage of the disarray. The Tulunid troops deserted, allowing the Caliphate's forces to penetrate the Nile valley. Harun's reign came to a tragic end when he was killed during an army mutiny, marking the decline of the Tulunid dynasty.
