Hassan Rouhani

Hassan Rouhani, born on November twelfth, nineteen forty-eight, is a prominent Iranian politician and diplomat who served as the seventh president of Iran from two thousand thirteen to two thousand twenty-one. A sharia lawyer, academic, and Islamic cleric, Rouhani has held various significant positions throughout his career, including a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts from nineteen ninety-nine to twenty twenty-four and the Expediency Council from nineteen ninety-one to two thousand thirteen.

Rouhani's political journey includes serving as the deputy speaker of the Iranian Parliament during its fourth and fifth terms and as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from nineteen eighty-nine to two thousand five. In this role, he was the chief negotiator with the European Union, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany regarding Iran's nuclear technology, showcasing his expertise in both diplomacy and security.

In May two thousand thirteen, Rouhani registered for the presidential election, which took place in June. His campaign focused on economic restoration, improving relations with Western nations, and advocating for a civil rights charter. He was elected president on June fifteenth, defeating several candidates, including Tehran mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and officially took office on August third, two thousand thirteen. His election was marked by Time magazine recognizing him as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in the same year.

As a centrist and reformist, Rouhani has promoted personal freedoms and women's rights, appointing female spokespeople in the foreign ministry. His diplomatic efforts have led to improved relations with various countries, characterized by conciliatory exchanges. He was re-elected in the two thousand seventeen election, securing over twenty-three million votes, which represented a significant electoral mandate.

Despite initially enjoying the support of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during his second term, their relationship deteriorated due to criticisms regarding Rouhani's negotiation strategies with the West over the nuclear agreement. Following his presidency, Rouhani was not appointed to any senior role by Khamenei, marking a notable shift in their political dynamic.
