Hayreddin Barbarossa

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Hayreddin Barbarossa

Hayreddin Barbarossa, born around fourteen seventy-eight on the island of Lesbos, emerged as a formidable figure in the annals of naval history. His early career as a corsair was shaped under the guidance of his elder brother, Oruç Reis. Together, they made a significant mark by capturing Algiers from Spanish control in fifteen sixteen, a bold move that saw Oruç proclaim himself Sultan.

Following the untimely death of Oruç in fifteen eighteen, Khizr, who had inherited the nickname 'Barbarossa' meaning 'Redbeard', also received the honorary title of Hayreddin, translating to 'goodness of the faith'. This period marked the beginning of his ascent within the Ottoman ranks, as he continued to expand his influence and power.

In fifteen thirty-three, Barbarossa was appointed as the Kapudan Pasha, or grand admiral, of the Ottoman Navy by the illustrious Suleiman the Magnificent. His tenure was marked by remarkable achievements, including the conquest of Tunis in fifteen thirty-four and a decisive victory over the Holy League at Preveza in fifteen thirty-eight. His strategic alliances, particularly with France during the 1540s, further solidified Ottoman dominance in the Mediterranean.

After a distinguished career filled with naval victories and political maneuvering, Barbarossa retired to Constantinople in fifteen forty-five. He passed away the following year, leaving behind a legacy that would resonate through the ages as a symbol of Ottoman naval prowess.
