Hayton of Corycus

Hayton of Corycus, also known as Hethum or Het'um, was a prominent medieval Armenian nobleman and historiographer born around the year one thousand two hundred thirty-five. His life spanned a significant period, with estimates placing his death between one thousand three hundred ten and one thousand three hundred twenty. As a member of the Norbertines, he likely served as a Catholic priest, intertwining his religious duties with his scholarly pursuits.

One of Hayton's most notable contributions to history is his work titled 'La Flor des estoires de la terre d'Orient,' which translates to 'Flower of the Histories of the East.' This historiographical masterpiece, composed at the behest of Pope Clement V in one thousand three hundred seven, provides a detailed account of Asia's history, particularly focusing on the Muslim conquests and the Mongol invasion. His narrative was recorded in Old French by Nicolas Faulcon, who also translated it into Latin, ensuring its wide dissemination.

Hayton's writings played a crucial role in shaping Western European perceptions of the Orient during the Late Middle Ages.
