Hazel R. O'Leary

Hazel R. O'Leary, born on May seventeenth, nineteen thirty-seven, is a distinguished American lawyer, politician, and university administrator. She made history as the seventh United States Secretary of Energy, serving from nineteen ninety-three to nineteen ninety-seven. A member of the Democratic Party, O'Leary was the first woman and the first African American to hold this significant position.

O'Leary's academic journey began at Fisk University, her alma mater, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She later obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from Rutgers School of Law. Her career commenced as a prosecutor in New Jersey, followed by a role in a private consulting and accounting firm. O'Leary's public service began in the Carter administration within the newly established Department of Energy.

After returning to the private sector in nineteen eighty-one, O'Leary re-entered government service as Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton. During her tenure, she was instrumental in declassifying documents that revealed the United States' secret testing on the effects of radiation on unsuspecting citizens. However, her time in office was not without controversy, as she faced criticism for excessive spending on international trips.

Following her role in the federal government, O'Leary served as the fourteenth president of Fisk University from two thousand four to two thousand thirteen. Her presidency came during a challenging financial period for the institution, yet she successfully increased enrollment and controversially utilized the school's art collection to generate funds.
