He Xiangning

He Xiangning, born on June twenty-seventh, eighteen seventy-eight, was a multifaceted figure in Chinese history, known for her roles as a painter, politician, writer, poet, and human rights defender. She emerged as a prominent revolutionary and feminist, aligning herself with Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary movement, Tongmenghui, alongside her husband, Liao Zhongkai. Her commitment to women's rights was evident during her tenure as Minister for Women's Affairs in Sun's Nationalist government in Guangzhou, where she organized China's inaugural rally for International Women's Day in nineteen twenty-four.

Following the tragic assassination of her husband in nineteen twenty-five and the subsequent persecution of Communists by Chiang Kai-shek in nineteen twenty-seven, He Xiangning distanced herself from party politics for two decades. However, her dedication to her country remained unwavering as she actively participated in organizing resistance against the Japanese invasion of China.

In nineteen forty-eight, she co-founded the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, marking a significant return to political life. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, she held numerous high-ranking positions, including Vice Chairwoman of the CPPCC from nineteen fifty-four to nineteen sixty-four, Vice Chairwoman of the National People's Congress from nineteen fifty-nine to nineteen seventy-two, and Chairwoman of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang from nineteen sixty to nineteen seventy-two. Additionally, she served as Honorary Chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation.

He Xiangning was also a distinguished painter associated with the Lingnan School of Chinese art, and she led the China Artists Association during the nineteen sixties. Her legacy continues to be celebrated, with the National He Xiangning Art Museum opening in Shenzhen in nineteen ninety-seven, showcasing her contributions to art and culture, including her works featured on Chinese stamps.
