Héctor Camacho

Héctor Luís Camacho Matías, widely known as "Macho Camacho," was a celebrated Puerto Rican professional boxer born on May 24, 1962. His boxing career spanned from 1980 to 2010, during which he showcased remarkable speed and a flamboyant style that captivated fans. Camacho achieved world champion status in three different weight classes, holding the WBC super featherweight title from 1983 to 1984, the WBC lightweight title from 1985 to 1987, and the WBO junior welterweight title twice between 1989 and 1992.

Before turning professional, Camacho had a distinguished amateur career, winning three New York Golden Gloves tournaments, starting with the Sub-Novice 112 lbs championship in 1978. Throughout his professional journey, he faced and triumphed over some of boxing's biggest names, including Rafael Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario, and Roberto Durán, among others. His ability to knock out Sugar Ray Leonard remains one of the highlights of his career.

In his later years, Camacho transitioned into television, appearing on various Spanish-language reality shows, including Univision's "Mira Quien Baila" and a segment on "El Gordo y La Flaca" called "Macho News." However, his life was marred by struggles with drug abuse and legal issues, including a seven-year prison sentence for burglary, of which he served one year under house arrest.

Tragically, Camacho's life was cut short when he was shot on November 20, 2012, while sitting in a car outside a bar in Bayamón. He succumbed to his injuries four days later, after being declared clinically brain dead. His mother made the heart-wrenching decision to remove him from life support, and following his passing, his remains were transported to New York for burial.
