Héctor Vergara

Héctor O. Vergara, born on December 15, 1966, in San Javier, Chile, is a distinguished Canadian soccer referee who has made significant contributions to the sport. Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he attended John Taylor Collegiate and later earned dual degrees in Recreation Studies (Sports Administration) and Advanced Psychology from the University of Manitoba. His passion for soccer led him to play competitively for a decade and recreationally for three decades.

Vergara began his officiating career in 1983, amassing an impressive twenty-eight years of experience as a referee. His journey in the Canadian National Soccer League began in 1993, and he has since become one of the most respected figures in Canadian soccer. As the executive director of the Manitoba Soccer Association, he has played a pivotal role in overseeing numerous leagues, clubs, and associations, contributing to the growth of soccer in the province.

His remarkable career includes a tenure as a FIFA Assistant Referee, which concluded on November 12, 2011, following his last international appointment. Vergara was part of the Canadian officiating crew for the FIFA World Cup Qualifying match between the US Virgin Islands and Curaçao, showcasing his expertise on a global stage. Over nineteen years on the FIFA list, he participated in eleven FIFA competitions, including three World Cups in 2002, 2006, and 2010.

Notably, Vergara holds the record for officiating the most World Cup games as a referee or assistant referee, with fourteen matches to his name. His impressive list of accomplishments features six CONCACAF Gold Cups, the 2004 Olympic Games, and two FIFA Club World Cups. In 2012, he was appointed to FIFA's Referees' Committee as a Development Member, and in 2014, he was honored with induction into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame.
