Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr, born on November 9, 1914, was a remarkable figure who seamlessly blended the worlds of entertainment and invention. An Austrian and American actress, she first made her mark in Czechoslovakia with her role in the controversial film Ecstasy (1933). After escaping her tumultuous marriage to Friedrich Mandl, Lamarr ventured to Paris and later to London, where she caught the eye of Louis B. Mayer, leading to a film contract in Hollywood.

Lamarr quickly rose to stardom, captivating audiences with her performances in films such as Algiers (1938), Boom Town (1940), and White Cargo (1942). Her most notable work, however, was in the religious epic Samson and Delilah (1949), which solidified her status as a leading actress. Beyond the silver screen, she also made appearances on television, with her final film released in 1958. In recognition of her contributions to the film industry, Lamarr was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

In addition to her acting career, Lamarr was a pioneering inventor. At the onset of World War II, she collaborated with composer George Antheil to develop a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes. This innovative system utilized spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to counteract the threat of radio jamming by enemy forces. Although the patent for their invention expired in 1959, the principles of their work laid the groundwork for modern secure wireless communications, including technologies like Bluetooth and early Wi-Fi.
