Heinrich Rohrer

Heinrich Rohrer, born on June sixth, nineteen thirty-three, was a distinguished Swiss physicist renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of nanotechnology. He is best known for co-developing the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), a revolutionary instrument that has transformed the way scientists observe and manipulate matter at the atomic level.

In recognition of his exceptional work, Rohrer was awarded half of the Nobel Prize in Physics in nineteen eighty-six, sharing this prestigious honor with fellow physicist Gerd Binnig. The other half of the prize was awarded to Ernst Ruska, further highlighting the significance of their collective advancements in microscopy.

In memory of Heinrich Rohrer, the Surface Science Society of Japan presents the Heinrich Rohrer Medal triennially, in collaboration with IBM Research – Zurich and the Swiss Embassy in Japan. This medal serves to honor his legacy and contributions to the scientific community.

It is important to note that the Heinrich Rohrer Medal should not be confused with the Heinrich Rohrer Award, which was presented at the Nano Seoul twenty twenty conference, showcasing the ongoing impact of his work in the field.
