Heinrich Schliemann

Heinrich Schliemann, born on January sixth, eighteen twenty-two, was a remarkable German businessman whose passions extended far beyond commerce. He was not only a successful merchant but also an art historian, archaeologist, polyglot, traveler, entrepreneur, and writer. His diverse interests and talents allowed him to make significant contributions to the field of archaeology.

Schliemann is best known for his fervent belief in the historicity of the locations described in Homer's epic works. His most notable archaeological endeavors included the excavation of Hisarlık, which is widely accepted as the site of ancient Troy, as well as the Mycenaean sites of Mycenae and Tiryns. Through his work, he sought to validate the historical events depicted in the Iliad, lending credence to the idea that these tales were rooted in reality.

Despite his groundbreaking discoveries, Schliemann's methods were not without controversy. His excavation of nine distinct layers of archaeological remains has faced criticism for being overly destructive, resulting in the loss of significant historical artifacts. This includes the layer believed to represent the Homeric Troy, raising questions about the balance between discovery and preservation in archaeological practice.
