Heinrich von Veldeke

Heinrich von Veldeke stands as a pioneering figure in the literary history of the Low Countries, recognized as the first known writer to compose in a European language other than Latin. His origins trace back to Veldeke, a hamlet that is now part of Spalbeek in the municipality of Hasselt, located in Belgian Limburg. The only remnant of this hamlet is the Vel(de)kermolen, a historic water mill on the banks of the Demer River.

While the exact dates of his birth and death remain uncertain, it is believed that he was born around the year eleven fifty. His literary contributions began to emerge in the early 1170s, and he certainly passed away after the year eleven eighty-four, as he references attending a court day organized by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in Mainz during Pentecost of that year. His death likely occurred before the completion of Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival, which was finalized between twelve oh five and twelve ten, where Veldeke is noted to have died prematurely.

Veldeke is celebrated in Limburg as a writer of Old Limburgish, and his works reflect a deep engagement with Latin sources, suggesting he received a comprehensive education. He is thought to have belonged to a ministerial class family, a status indicated in documents from the thirteenth century. This background may have provided him with the resources and knowledge necessary to become a significant figure in medieval literature.
