Helen Frankenthaler

Helen Frankenthaler, born on December twelfth, nineteen twenty-eight, was a pioneering American abstract expressionist painter whose influence on postwar American art is profound. Her career spanned over six decades, from the early nineteen fifties until two thousand eleven, during which she continually produced innovative and evolving works that resonated with multiple generations of abstract painters.

Emerging in the early nineteen fifties, Frankenthaler showcased her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries. She gained significant recognition when she was included in the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition, curated by Clement Greenberg, which introduced a new wave of abstract painting known as color field. Her artistic journey was shaped by the works of influential figures such as Greenberg, Hans Hofmann, and Jackson Pollock.

Throughout her illustrious career, Frankenthaler's work has been the focus of numerous retrospective exhibitions, including a notable one at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in nineteen eighty-nine. Her art has been exhibited globally since the nineteen fifties, showcasing her unique vision and contribution to the art world.

In recognition of her significant contributions to the arts, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts in two thousand one. Frankenthaler lived and worked in Darien, Connecticut, where she created many of her celebrated pieces.
