Helena of Bulgaria, born in the year fourteen hundred, was a prominent figure in medieval politics as the Queen and Empress consort of Serbia. She was married to King Stefan Dušan, who ruled from thirteen thirty-one to fifty-five, and played a significant role in the political landscape of the region.
In the years of thirteen fifty-five and fifty-six, Helena served as the regent of Serbia for her son, Stefan Uroš V. Her leadership during this transitional period was crucial in maintaining stability within the kingdom.
After stepping away from her political duties, Helena embraced a life of spirituality and devotion, becoming a nun. She is honored as a saint in the Orthodox Church, where she is venerated under her monastic name, Saint Elizabeth.
