Hella Wuolijoki

Hella Maria Wuolijoki, born Ella Maria Murrik on July 22, 1886, was a multifaceted figure in Finnish culture and politics. An Estonian-born writer and playwright, she is celebrated for her significant contributions to the arts, particularly through her acclaimed Niskavuori series of plays. Her literary prowess extended beyond national borders, as she collaborated with the renowned German playwright Bertolt Brecht on the notable work, Mr Puntila and his Man Matti.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Wuolijoki was an influential political figure. She served as a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1946 to 1948, where she made her mark in the political landscape of the post-war era. Her leadership skills were further exemplified when she took on the role of Director General of Yle, Finland's national public broadcasting company, from April 1945 to June 1949.

Wuolijoki's impact was not limited to the stage and the political arena; she also played a crucial role in the peace negotiations during the Winter War, leveraging her friendship with the prominent diplomat Alexandra Kollontai.
