Hemachandra

Hemachandra, born as Caṅgadeva in the year 1089, emerged as a towering figure in the realms of mathematics, philosophy, and literature during the 11th and 12th centuries. Renowned as a prodigy, he was honored with the title kalikālasarvajña, meaning 'the knower of all knowledge in his times.' His contributions to the Śvetāmbara Jaina tradition and his role as a scholar and poet have left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape of his era.

In 1110, Hemachandra was ordained in the Śvetāmbara school of Jainism, adopting the name Somacandra. His journey into the world of politics began in 1125 when he became an adviser to King Kumārapāla. During this period, he authored Arhannīti, a significant work that presents a political perspective rooted in Jaina philosophy.

Among his most notable achievements is the epic poem Triśaṣṭi-śalākā-puruṣacarita, which chronicles the lives of sixty-three illustrious figures in Jain history. This work not only showcases his literary prowess but also serves as a vital historical document that reflects the values and teachings of Jainism.

Later in his life, Hemachandra was consecrated as an ācārya, at which point he adopted the name that would become synonymous with his legacy. He is also celebrated as the father of the Gujarati language, further solidifying his influence on the cultural and linguistic development of the region.
