Hemedti

Hemedti, born in 1975, is a prominent military figure and warlord from Sudan, known for his controversial role in the Darfur conflict. As a chief of the Janjaweed militia, he has been accused of leading atrocities during the genocide in Darfur from two thousand three to two thousand five. His military career took a significant turn when he joined the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in two thousand thirteen, eventually becoming its military head.

In the wake of the revolution against President Omar al-Bashir, Hemedti emerged as a key player in Sudan's political landscape. Following the two thousand nineteen coup d'état, he was appointed deputy head of the Transitional Military Council (TMC). His influence grew as he became a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, which was established to guide Sudan towards democracy.

Hemedti's business acumen is notable; he is considered one of the wealthiest individuals in Sudan, with his company, al-Junaid, involved in various sectors including investment, mining, and transport. His political maneuvers included signing significant agreements in July and August of two thousand nineteen, aimed at stabilizing the country.

However, his relationship with army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan soured, leading to a public declaration in February two thousand twenty-three where he labeled the coup a 'mistake.' This rift escalated into conflict, culminating in the current Sudanese civil war as Hemedti mobilized the RSF against al-Burhan's government.

Despite his political and military achievements, Hemedti's legacy is marred by allegations of human rights violations, including systematic killings and rapes in Darfur. His involvement in the massacre at Adwa in two thousand four earned him the grim title 'Butcher of Darfur,' reflecting the dark chapters of his career.
