Henri Estienne

Henri Estienne, also known as Henricus Stephanus, was a prominent French printer and classical scholar born in 1528. As the eldest son of Robert Estienne, he was immersed in the world of languages from an early age, receiving instruction in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew from his father. Following his father's death in 1559, Henri took the reins of the Estienne printing firm, continuing the legacy of excellence in publishing.

Estienne's most significant contribution to the field of lexicography was the Thesaurus graecae linguae, a monumental work printed in five volumes. This comprehensive dictionary laid the groundwork for Greek lexicology and remained unmatched for three hundred years, solidifying Estienne's reputation as a leading figure in classical scholarship.

In addition to his lexicographical achievements, Estienne published numerous works of Greek authors, with his editions of Plato being particularly noteworthy. His publications introduced the Stephanus pagination system, which is still utilized today to reference Plato's texts. Furthermore, in 1562, he produced the first printed Latin translation of Sextus Empiricus's works, a pivotal moment that facilitated the spread of Pyrrhonian skepticism throughout early modern Europe, influencing thinkers like Michel de Montaigne.

Henri Estienne's life came to a close in Lyon in 1598, but his contributions to the fields of printing and classical philology continue to resonate through the ages.
