Henri Toivonen

Henri Toivonen, born on August twenty-fifth, nineteen fifty-six, in Jyväskylä, Finland, was a remarkable rally driver whose legacy continues to inspire motorsport enthusiasts. Growing up in a family steeped in racing, with his father Pauli being the 1968 European Rally Champion for Porsche, Henri was destined for a life behind the wheel. His younger brother, Harri, also pursued a career in racing, further solidifying the Toivonen family's connection to the sport.

Toivonen's ascent in the World Rally Championship began with a stunning victory at the 1980 Lombard RAC Rally in Great Britain, where he drove a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. This triumph made him the youngest driver to win a world rally title at the age of twenty-four, a record that stood until Jari-Matti Latvala surpassed it in two thousand eight. After stints with Opel and Porsche, Toivonen joined Lancia, where he showcased his exceptional talent and determination.

Despite a near-fatal incident at the Rally Costa Smeralda in early nineteen eighty-five, which nearly left him paralyzed, Toivonen made a remarkable comeback. He clinched victory at the RAC Rally later that year and opened the following season with a win at the Monte Carlo Rally, an event his father had won two decades earlier. His tenacity and skill on the tarmac were evident as he also competed in circuit racing and the European Endurance Championship.

Tragically, Toivonen's life was cut short on May second, nineteen eighty-six, during the Tour de Corse rally in Corsica, where he was leading the race. A catastrophic crash claimed his life and that of his American co-driver, Sergio Cresto, when their Lancia Delta S4 plunged down a ravine and exploded. The incident, shrouded in mystery due to the lack of witnesses, led to the immediate banning of the powerful Group B rally cars, marking the end of an era in rallying.

In honor of his contributions to motorsport, the annual Race of Champions was originally organized in Toivonen's memory, awarding the Henri Toivonen Memorial Trophy to the winning driver. His legacy as a pioneering rally driver remains etched in the history of the sport.
