Henry Campbell-Bannerman

Henry Campbell-Bannerman, born on September seventh, eighteen thirty-six, was a prominent British statesman and a key figure in the Liberal Party. He served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from nineteen oh five to nineteen oh eight, and was the Leader of the Liberal Party during the same period. Notably, he was the first individual to be officially referred to as the 'Prime Minister,' a title that came into formal use just five days after he assumed office.

Throughout his political career, Campbell-Bannerman held the position of Secretary of State for War on two occasions, serving under the cabinets of both William Ewart Gladstone and Archibald Philip Primrose, the Earl of Rosebery. He is recognized for being the only person to simultaneously hold the titles of Prime Minister and Father of the House, and he remains the last Liberal leader to achieve a parliamentary majority in the UK.

Known affectionately as 'CB,' Campbell-Bannerman was a staunch advocate for free trade, Irish Home Rule, and the enhancement of social conditions, including the reduction of working hours. His leadership saw the Liberal Party rebound from a general-election defeat in nineteen hundred to a remarkable victory over the Conservative Party in the nineteen oh six general election, marking the last time the Liberals secured an overall majority in the House of Commons.

Under his guidance, the government enacted significant legislation, including protections for trade unions against liability for damages during strikes, the introduction of free school meals for all children, and the empowerment of local authorities to acquire agricultural land from private landlords. Unfortunately, Campbell-Bannerman's tenure as Prime Minister was cut short due to ill health, leading to his resignation in April nineteen oh eight, just nineteen days before his passing at the official residence, ten Downing Street.
