Henry I of Castile

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Henry I of Castile

Henry I of Castile, born on April fourteenth, twelve oh four, ascended to the throne at a tender age of ten following the death of his father, Alfonso VIII of Castile, on October fifth, twelve fourteen. His reign, however, was short-lived, lasting from twelve fourteen until twelve seventeen, as he was caught in a power struggle between his sister, Queen Berengaria, and his guardian, Count Álvaro Núñez de Lara.

As the only surviving son of Alfonso VIII and Eleanor of England, Henry's early years were marked by instability. His mother passed away shortly after his father's death, leaving him vulnerable. Berengaria initially took on the role of regent, but her authority was challenged by discontented nobles, leading to her relinquishing control and custody of Henry to Álvaro in early twelve fifteen.

In an effort to strengthen his position, Álvaro sought to arrange a marriage between Henry and Mafalda of Portugal, but Berengaria successfully intervened to annul this union. Álvaro then attempted to betroth Henry to Sancha of León in twelve sixteen, yet this proposal was also rejected by the Leónese.

The conflict between Berengaria and Álvaro escalated into open warfare in April twelve seventeen. During this tumultuous period, Álvaro took Henry along on military campaigns, using the young king's presence as leverage against Berengaria and her supporters. Tragically, Henry's life was cut short when he was killed by a tile dislodged by one of his playmates shortly thereafter, paving the way for Berengaria to succeed him on the throne.
