Henry Laurens

Henry Laurens, born on March sixth, seventeen twenty-four, was a prominent American Founding Father and a significant political figure during the Revolutionary War. Hailing from South Carolina, he was not only a merchant and rice planter but also a key delegate to the Second Continental Congress, where he succeeded John Hancock as president. His leadership was instrumental in the passage of the Articles of Confederation, marking a pivotal moment in American history.

As a partner in the largest slave-trading house in North America, Austin and Laurens, he amassed considerable wealth. In the 1750s, this Charleston-based firm was responsible for the sale of over eight thousand enslaved Africans, highlighting the complex and often troubling economic foundations of his success.

Laurens also held the position of vice president of South Carolina and served as the United States minister to the Dutch Republic during the tumultuous years of the Revolutionary War. His commitment to the cause of independence was evident, though it came at a personal cost when he was captured at sea by the British and spent more than a year imprisoned in the Tower of London.

His legacy is further enriched by his son, John Laurens, who served as an aide-de-camp to George Washington and rose to the rank of colonel in the Continental Army, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and dedication that characterized the Laurens family during this critical period in American history.
