Henry McMaster, born on May twenty-seventh, nineteen forty-seven, in Columbia, South Carolina, is a prominent American politician and attorney. He has been serving as the 117th governor of South Carolina since 2017, following his tenure as the 91st lieutenant governor under Governor Nikki Haley from 2015 to 2017. A dedicated member of the Republican Party, McMaster's political journey has been marked by significant roles, including his service as the 50th attorney general of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011.
McMaster's academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Carolina, followed by a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. His early career saw him working alongside U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond and serving as a federal prosecutor. In 1981, he was appointed as the United States attorney for the District of South Carolina by President Ronald Reagan, where he gained recognition for his work in investigating marijuana smuggling operations.
Despite facing challenges in his political aspirations, including two unsuccessful campaigns for the U.S. Senate in 1986 and lieutenant governor in 1990, McMaster's resilience led him to chair the South Carolina Republican Party from 1993 to 2002. He was elected attorney general in 2002 and successfully reelected in 2006. After a brief hiatus from electoral success, he was appointed to the South Carolina Ports Authority in 2011 and later won the lieutenant governorship in 2014.
Upon Nikki Haley's resignation to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, McMaster ascended to the governorship in 2017. He secured a full term in 2018 after a narrow victory in the Republican primary runoff and was reelected in 2022. As of January twenty-ninth, twenty twenty-five, he holds the distinction of being South Carolina's longest-serving governor and the third-longest serving incumbent governor in the United States. His influence continues to grow, as evidenced by his appointment to the Homeland Security Advisory Council by President Donald Trump on April seventeenth, twenty twenty-five.
