Henry Murray

Henry Murray, born on May 13, 1893, was a prominent American psychologist and university teacher at Harvard University. He made significant contributions to the field of psychology, particularly through his development of personology, a theory centered around the concepts of 'need' and 'press'. His work laid the groundwork for understanding personality in a nuanced way.

From 1930 onwards, Murray served as the Director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic within the School of Arts and Sciences. His influence extended beyond theoretical frameworks; he was also a co-developer of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) alongside Christiana Morgan. This test became widely recognized, with Murray famously referring to it as 'the second best-seller that Harvard ever published, second only to the Harvard Dictionary of Music'.

However, Murray's legacy is not without controversy. Between 1959 and 1962, he conducted a series of ethically questionable experiments involving minors and undergraduate students, one of whom was Ted Kaczynski, who would later gain infamy as the Unabomber. These experiments have sparked significant debate regarding the ethical boundaries of psychological research.
