Henry Pybus Bell-Irving, born on January twenty-first, nineteen thirteen, in Vancouver, was a distinguished Canadian military officer and politician. He received his early education at Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island and Loretto in Musselburgh, Scotland. Although he began his studies at the University of British Columbia, the outbreak of World War II led him to withdraw and serve his country.

During the war, Bell-Irving joined The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, where he commanded a company during significant campaigns in Sicily, Italy, and northwest Europe. His leadership skills were further recognized when he became the commander of the 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his fellow soldiers.

After returning to Vancouver, Bell-Irving transitioned into the business world by joining his family's real estate company, Bell-Irving Insurance Agencies. This venture later merged with A.E. LePage in nineteen seventy-two. His influence extended beyond business; in nineteen seventy-four, he was elected Chairman of the Vancouver Board of Trade, reflecting his leadership in the community.

In nineteen seventy-eight, he was appointed the twenty-third Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia by Governor General Jules Léger, following the recommendation of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. This role marked a significant chapter in his public service career.

On a personal note, Bell-Irving met his wife, Nancy, while attending UBC, and they married in April nineteen thirty-seven, building a life together that intertwined both personal and professional achievements.
