Henry Sherwood

Henry Sherwood, born on January first, eighteen oh seven, was a prominent lawyer and Tory politician in the Province of Canada. Hailing from a Loyalist family in Brockville, located in Augusta Township, Upper Canada, he pursued a legal education and was called to the bar in eighteen twenty-eight. His legal acumen earned him the title of Queen's Counsel in eighteen thirty-eight, marking him as a significant figure in the legal community.

As a member of the Family Compact, a group of influential families with strong British and Loyalist ties, Sherwood played a vital role in the governance of Upper Canada during the early nineteenth century. He was elected to the provincial Parliament of Upper Canada in eighteen thirty-six and later attempted to secure a seat in the Parliament of the Province of Canada, facing defeat in his first election bid in eighteen forty-one. His political career included serving as Solicitor-General of Canada West and Joint Premier of the Province of Canada.

In addition to his provincial duties, Sherwood was active in municipal politics, being elected to the Toronto town council in eighteen forty-one. He served three consecutive terms as Mayor of Toronto from eighteen forty-two to eighteen forty-four, showcasing his commitment to local governance. His affiliations also included membership in the Orange Order in Canada, reflecting his political and social connections.

However, Sherwood's political journey was not without controversy. He was involved in two notable political riots, including the Types Riot, which targeted the printing press of reformist William Lyon Mackenzie. The second riot, following his electoral defeat in eighteen forty-one, resulted in a tragic shooting incident linked to his brother's tavern. Despite these tumultuous events, Sherwood's legacy in Canadian politics remains significant.

Sadly, Henry Sherwood's life was cut short when he succumbed to ill health while traveling in Bavaria in eighteen fifty-five, at the age of forty-eight. His contributions to law and politics in Canada continue to be remembered.
