Heraclonas

Heraclonas, born in six hundred eighteen, was a Byzantine emperor who briefly held power in the tumultuous years following his father's reign. As the son of Emperor Heraclius and his niece Martina, Heraclonas was thrust into a complex political landscape shaped by familial ties and the ambitions of his mother, who was a significant figure in his life and rule.

Martina, despite her unpopularity, played a crucial role in Heraclonas' ascent to co-emperor alongside his elder brother, Constantine. Her machinations ensured that her sons were positioned favorably in the line of succession, effectively sidelining Constantine's children. This strategic move was part of a broader effort to consolidate her influence within the imperial court, as she sought to establish her authority during her husband's reign.

Upon the death of Heraclius in February six hundred forty-one, both Heraclonas and Constantine were proclaimed joint-emperors. However, the young Heraclonas found himself under the regency of his mother, who dominated the empire's affairs. This led to a division in political factions, as Martina's opposition to Constantine's policies created a rift that would have lasting implications for the empire.

Heraclonas' reign was short-lived, lasting only until October or November of six hundred forty-one when he was overthrown by Valentinus, a general of Armenian descent. Following a brutal coup, Heraclonas was exiled to Rhodes, where he is believed to have died the following year, marking the end of a brief and tumultuous chapter in Byzantine history.
