Herb Dhaliwal, born on December twelfth, nineteen fifty-two, is a prominent Canadian politician and businessman. He made his mark in Canadian politics when he was first elected to the House of Commons in the nineteen ninety-three election, representing the Liberal Party as the Member of Parliament for Vancouver South.
In a historic move, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien appointed Dhaliwal to the Cabinet in nineteen ninety-seven, making him the first Indian-Canadian to hold a federal cabinet minister position. His roles included Minister of Revenue, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and later, Minister of Natural Resources, where he also held political responsibility for British Columbia.
Dhaliwal was a staunch supporter of Chrétien during the internal party conflicts with Paul Martin, which led to tensions within the Liberal Party. His vocal criticism of Martin's campaign team, particularly regarding their attempts to control party membership access, highlighted his commitment to party integrity.
When Chrétien announced his resignation, Dhaliwal contemplated entering the nineteen ninety-three Liberal leadership race but ultimately chose not to. Instead, he endorsed Martin for leadership and expressed his willingness to serve in a Martin cabinet. However, on December third, two thousand three, he declared that he would not seek re-election.
