Herbert Charles Wilson

Herbert Charles Wilson, born on December seventh, eighteen fifty-nine, in Canada West, now known as Ontario, was a prominent figure in both the medical and political landscapes of early Edmonton. Coming from a family with extensive business interests in Picton, Ontario, Wilson pursued a career in medicine, ultimately moving to Edmonton in eighteen eighty-two, where he became one of the first physicians to establish a practice in the area.

In addition to his medical career, Wilson was deeply involved in civic affairs. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories in eighteen eighty-five, where he served as speaker, implementing significant changes to the council's rules and procedures. After six years in territorial politics, he stepped down due to health concerns but continued to maintain a medical practice and engaged with local corporations.

Wilson's commitment to Edmonton extended to his role as mayor, a position he held from eighteen ninety-five to eighteen ninety-seven. His tenure was marked by controversy, leading to his departure after less than two years due to a dispute over town funds. Despite a failed attempt to return to politics in nineteen oh-four, Wilson remained a respected figure in the community.

In his personal life, Wilson married in eighteen eighty-six and was a father to a son and two daughters. He passed away in nineteen oh-nine, leaving a legacy that includes an industrial park in Edmonton named in his honor.
